Kenny Hawkins is an American journalist working for WJHL as the sports director since he was promoted in 1992. In addition to his role as sports director, Hawkins works as the co-host of “Morning Monster” on WXSM Cumulus radio 640AM three days a week. He joined the station in 1986 as a videographer and has served the station for more than 35 years.

Hawkins joined East Tennessee State University when he finished his high school education. Later, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. During college, he was an intern at a TV in the Tri-Cities and was a nighttime DJ at WQUT-FM.

Hawkins has worked for WJHL as the sports director since he was promoted in 1992. Upon joining the station, he first worked as a videographer. He was promoted to weekend sports anchor three years later. As a high schooler, he helped in the creation of the high school sports show “Sportscenter 7” airing on local cable stations in Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs, and Clinton, TN.

During his career, WJHL has won many awards including the Tennessee Associated Press award for Best Sports Video, Best Sports Talk Show, Best Sports Story, and Best Sportscast. In 2004, he won the Virginia Associated Press Best SportsDepartment Award, making WJHL the only station located outside Virginia to win that honor.

In addition to his role as sports director, Hawkins works as the co-host of “Morning Monster” on WXSM Cumulus radio 640AM three days a week. Away from journalism, he is heavily involved in the community. He has served organizations like Speedway Children’s Charities, Doe River Gorge, Relay for Life, the United Way, and St. Jude’s.

Hawkins co-founded the Diabetes Association and worked as its honorary chairman of the Tri-Cities chapter of Step Out Walk for Diabetes which collected over a million dollars. He is on the board of directors of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame after he was nominated Lieutenant Governor. In 2005, he served as an inductee of the ETSU Communications Department Hall of Fame.
