Kavanaugh was also lucky enough to cover huge national stories, including the tragedy in Sandy Hook in 2012 and the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 included. In 2004 she was awarded a journalism fellowship by the RIAS German/American Exchange Program where Kerry is an alumnus. She also took part in a journalism immersion program and produced a series of stories in Germany. Kavanaugh is also a proud Academic Mentor through Boston Partners in Education, she visits a local school weekly to work with students who just need some extra attention and another positive voice. Her fluent knowledge of Spanish helps her tell stories from a variety of communities. When she is not busy working she loves traveling and trying new restaurants.
