Kholby Martin Biography
Kholby Martin is an American journalist who serves as a meteorologist, Storm Chaser, Entrepreneur, Videographer & Outdoorsman for WHBF News. He was born and raised in Galesburg, IL where he continues to live to this day.
Kholby Martin Career
He developed a love for the outdoors and weather at a young age and knew it would follow him for the rest of his life. His father would take him to a storm site in the country as a kid to watch the storms roll in from the west. When they entered the damage path of the Utica, IL F3 tornado in April of 2004, it was one of his first true interactions with tornado devastation. He opted to seek a degree in meteorology because he wanted to understand how the atmosphere worked together to produce such destructive storms and tornadoes.
In 2010, he pursued his goal by enrolling at Western Illinois University to study meteorology and master the fundamentals of storm chasing. The EF4 Lambert Airport tornado near St. Louis, MO, and documenting the tornado outbreak over eastern Nebraska on June 20th was the first year for chasing out-of-state tornadoes. He would chase across the Plain states for the following few years, eventually earning a B.D. in Atmospheric Science from W.I.U in the spring of 2013.
He’s been chasing violent storms and tornadoes for thousands of miles every year since then, all while running a flourishing mowing and plowing business back home. Over the last decade, he has documented nearly 100 tornadoes and has seen tornadoes as huge as a mile wide.
In July 2015, he documented numerous tornadoes roughly 15 minutes from his home, including one that would hit Cameron, Illinois. On May 18th, 2013, he drove all night to southern Kansas, where he documented an EF4 tornado that came dangerously close to the town of Rozel.
He enjoys competitive bass fishing, racing outlaw snowmobiles on ice, and spending time in the woods hunting when he does not storm chasing. Also, Martin enjoys spending time with his family and being outside in the summer. He intends to continue storm chasing in the future and is thrilled to be a part of the Quad Cities weather team for Local 4 and Fox 18.
