At a young age, his family moved to San Clemente, California, where he grew up and met his best friends, and eventually went on to start a channel called O2L (Our2ndLife), which ended in 2014. He then created a channel with best friend Jc Caylen called KianandJc, and also has a personal YouTube channel, SuperKian13, which he launched in 2010.

In 2011, Lawley also had a collaborative channel with Sam Pottorff, named KianSam13. Lawley was a part of a collaborative channel Our2ndLife (commonly known as O2L) along with Trevor Moran, Jc Caylen, Connor Franta, Ricky Dillon, and best friend Sam Pottorff, before they separated in December 2014.

Acting career

In summer 2015, Lawley starred as Cameron in his first film, The Chosen. The film premiered at the 2015 VidCon convention. At the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, he won the award for Choice YouTuber.

In 2016, Lawley co-starred with Bella Thorne in the comedy Shovel Buddies. In March 2016, the film was selected and premiered at SXSW Festival. In the same year, Lawley also played “Bean Boy” in the Tyler Perry comedy Boo! A Madea Halloween, along with Jc Caylen.

In January 2017, Lawley announced his new show H8TERS with Caylen, and also in the year, he appeared alongside Halston Sage, Zoey Deutch, and Logan Miller in the film Before I Fall, for which he won the award for Choice Movie Actor: Drama at the 2017 Teen Choice Awards.

In 2017, Lawley also starred in the series, “Zac and Mia”, which follows two ordinary teenagers undergoing cancer treatment and finding hope, love and courage in exceptional circumstances. Lawley plays Zac.

In 2018, he received a nomination for a Daytime Emmy Award.

On February 5, 2018, it was announced that Lawley had been fired from The Hate U Give due to a resurfaced video showing him using racially offensive slurs, resulting in his role to be recast and scenes reshot with Riverdale star KJ Apa.

Lawley also apologized on Twitter and later through a YouTube video titled “2/25/18” in which he stated that he has a voice, with which he can speak and inspire millions of people who follow him on social media.

He was subsequently dropped by talent agency CAA following the resurfacing of the video.
