Swope had gained great interest since she was young, always fascinated with hail, lightning, sky, and tornadoes. Her passion for the weather she always admired being a meteorologist so she could study the atmosphere every day. She went to Oklahoma University where she minored in both broadcast journalism and mathematics and also earned her bachelor’s degree in meteorology.
While attending OU, she seized every opportunity she could. Additionally, she also tenured at OWL as a forecaster and also was tenured part-time for CIMMS, doing research on an NSF grant focusing on solar panels in Oklahoma. She also was a member of the OU chapter of AMS, worked part-time for IT, and worked shifts at OU Nightly. Additionally, she also tenured as an intern at NEWS9 and was also in May of 2010 accorded the president’s & dean’s honor roll and graduated with distinction.
She began her journalistic career at KMEG 14 in Sioux City, IA where she became the weekday morning meteorologist. During her tenure at the network, she forecasted for the tri-state area of South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. For the network, she featured several events including the April 9, 2011 tornado that destroyed 60% of the town of Mapleton, IA, blizzards, floods, droughts, and tornadoes. Later in 2011, she joined the News 9 weather team, covering live the May 19th and 20th devastating tornado outbreak.
The tornado came as shock to many since they never expected it to last for less than two weeks on May 31st. For the network’s extended coverage of the tornado, she and her teammates were accorded a regional Emmy Award. During her free time, she loves spending her time at Bob Mills Weather Center, with her family, her dog Hallie, her husband Tyler, and her daughter Brooklyn. Swope also enjoys anything outdoors: taking random road trips, fishing and hunting, shopping, and storm chasing.
