Gottlieb talked about her mysterious illness in one of her therapy sessions with her therapist, Wendell. She stated that she suffered muscle tremors, painful rashes, weakness, and fatigue. She also said that she had consulted many doctors, but none of them have been able to diagnose her symptoms. Gottlieb was once told by a specialist that the illness was the result of anxiety. She was told that it is a condition known as conversion disorder (hysteria): so-called since the anxiety of the patient is “converted” into physical symptoms. Gottlieb said that she felt bad after she heard that she was diagnosed with hysteria.

She accepted and promised that she would stay with her. Gottlieb described it as an “incredible experience.”

After a couple of years, Julie started to become too weak to come into the office, so Gottlieb began visiting her at home. Gottlieb already knew that Julies’s time of living was running out. One day when Gottlieb was at her office doing her everyday job, she got an email from Julie’s husband and she already had an idea of what was possibly written in the email. She did not open the email immediately, she waited until the evening when she is at home. Gottlieb headed to her bathroom and began crying.
