Marcus Rashford Biography

Marcus Rashford is an MBE award receiver English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and the England national team. Rashford began playing football at the age of five for Fletcher Moss Rangers.

Rashford began playing football at the age of five for Fletcher Moss Rangers. At the age of seven, he joined Manchester United’s academy system, despite interest from Everton and Liverpool. Rashford launched the In the Box campaign with Selfridges in October 2019 to provide essential items to homeless people during the Christmas season. During the UK lockdown imposed by Boris Johnson’s government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, he collaborated with the poverty and food waste charity FareShare to deliver meals to children who had lost access to free school meals. The initiative quickly raised more than £20 million to provide food for children across the country who would have received free meals if they were still in school. Rashford wrote an open letter to the UK government, urging them to end child food insecurity.

As a result of Rashford’s campaign, the government has now allocated nearly £400 million over the next 12 months to help poor families with the cost of food and household bills. Rashford was invited to an England under-16 training camp in 2012 and played two games for the team. Due to his underdeveloped physical development, Manchester United coaches believed the exposure would have been “too much” for him. In early 2016, he made his senior United debut against Norway’s under-21s. Three weeks later, he made his debut for the England Under-20 team, assisting in a 2-1 loss to Canada’s under-20s. In his only appearance, he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Norway in August 2016, scoring the third with a penalty.

Gareth Southgate praised Manchester United’s coaching staff for not allowing Rashford to play for England at the youth level. Rashford was expected to be available for selection for the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in May 2017, with the hope of gaining more tournament experience. Rashford’s departure would make no sense, according to United manager José Mourinho, because he was already playing senior football.
