Rashford began playing football at the age of five for Fletcher Moss Rangers. At the age of seven, he joined Manchester United’s academy system, despite interest from Everton and Liverpool. At the age of 11, he became the youngest player ever to be selected for the Manchester United Schoolboy Scholars scheme, which is usually reserved for players aged 12 and up. During the 2013–14 season, he trained with United’s first team for the first time as a 16-year-old under David Moyes’ management. The Guardian named him Man United’s best prospect in the 2014 Next Generation 2014.

In 2015, United Under-19s manager Nicky Butt praised Rashford’s performance for the team in a UEFA Youth League group stage match. Louis van Gaal named him to the first-team bench for a Premier League match against Watford on November 21. He received the number 39 squad number as a result of Van Gaal’s insistence that strikers wear a squad number beginning with a nine. He was named to the bench again the following week against Leicester City, but he did not play in the 1-1 draw. Crewe Alexandra made a loan bid for Rashford in February 2016.

Marcus Rashford Charity

Rashford launched the In the Box campaign with Selfridges in October 2019 to provide essential items to homeless people during the Christmas season. During the UK lockdown imposed by Boris Johnson’s government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, he collaborated with the poverty and food waste charity FareShare to deliver meals to children who had lost access to free school meals. The initiative quickly raised more than £20 million to provide food for children across the country who would have received free meals if they were still in school. Rashford wrote an open letter to the UK government, urging them to end child food insecurity.

The Guardian described his actions as a “political masterclass,” and he was praised for responding to comments made by Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock about footballers’ contributions. In September, he said he was “disappointed” by Conservative members of parliament’s “lack of empathy.” Rashford was credited as a major turning point in governmental talks when the UK government later changed its policy on the extension of free meals for children during the summer holidays. Rashford received the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in October.

A week later, he launched a petition to end child food poverty on the UK Parliament’s petitions website. Over 100,000 signatures were collected in 10 hours, and over 200,000 on the first day. It passed the threshold for consideration for parliamentary debate, but Labour rejected it. Those who voted against it, according to Rashford, lacked humanity. He described himself as “blown away” by the outpouring of national support that followed.

Over 100 businesses, charities, and local governments quickly pledged their support for the campaign. As a result of Rashford’s campaign, the government has now allocated nearly £400 million over the next 12 months to help poor families with the cost of food and household bills. He also received a record number of donations the day after the Parliamentary debate. FareShare’s new warehouse will be named in honor of his mother, the charity’s founder. The charity has also pledged to double donations for Christmas thanks to Rashford’s fundraising campaign.

Marcus Rashford International Career

Rashford was invited to an England under-16 training camp in 2012 and played two games for the team. Due to his underdeveloped physical development, Manchester United coaches believed the exposure would have been “too much” for him. In early 2016, he made his senior United debut against Norway’s under-21s. Three weeks later, he made his debut for the England Under-20 team, assisting in a 2-1 loss to Canada’s under-20s. In his only appearance, he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Norway in August 2016, scoring the third with a penalty.

Gareth Southgate praised Manchester United’s coaching staff for not allowing Rashford to play for England at the youth level. Rashford was expected to be available for selection for the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in May 2017, with the hope of gaining more tournament experience. Rashford’s departure would make no sense, according to United manager José Mourinho, because he was already playing senior football. Southgate chose Rashford for the senior squad instead of sending him to the tournament.
