Margaret Brennan Biography

Margaret Brennan is an American Moderator/Anchor working with CBS News serving as a moderator of Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan. She also works as a fill-in and substitutes anchor for CBS Evening News and the network’s chief foreign affairs correspondent. Prior to that, she was working as a White House correspondent for CBS and has covered Washington since the year 2012.

Brennan graduated from the Convent of the Holy Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut, with honors in 1998. She then went to the University of Virginia, where she graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Middle East Studies with a minor in Arabic. She was named an Emmerich-Wright scholar for her thesis and also studied abroad at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, Fulbright-Hays Grant. In 2015, she received an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Niagara for her work in foreign relations.

She has made a report on the White House throughout the Obama and Trump administrations for CBS programs and is a substitute anchor on CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News. He was also part of the BS News team honored with a 2012-2013 Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia Award for coverage of the Newtown tragedy.

Later on, the interview made headlines in Pyongyang and Seoul where his etiquette was the topic of a morning show. She was also among the first reporters to interview Hillary Clinton about the fatal attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya.

During a press conference on the 9th of September 2013, she asked Secretary of State, Joh Kerry, about any possibility for the Syrian government to avoid a U.S. strike. His answer was that Assad could “turn over a single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week.” However, he later changed his answer and was retracted as “a rhetorical argument about the impossibility and unlikelihood of Assad turning over chemical weapons he was denied using” by a State Department spokesperson.

Kerry led Russia’s foreign minister Sergey V. Lavrov to propose this as a solution to the crisis. On the 22nd of February 2018, she was named the 10th moderator of Face the Nation, the CBS Sunday morning political interview program. She was, therefore, the second woman to moderate the program.

Brennan was previously working with CNBC where she has served the station since the year 2002. She has served the station as a producer for financial journalist Louis Rukeyser. Brennan wrote that she did research and booked guests on Street Signs with Ron Insana, for which she coordinated guest bookings and produced interviews with former President George W. Bush and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Working as a CNBC correspondent, she was covering the financial crisis with a focus on consumer issues. She has also conducted interviews with former Walmart CEO Lee Scott and Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen. Brennan broke the story of Circuit City’s liquidation in the year 2009 and regularly covered changing consumer trends for the network.

Brennan has also helped in the coverage of Bloomberg’s 2012 Republican presidential candidate debates. She left Bloomberg in the year 2012 on the 27th of April 2012 when she was hosting her last show of InBusiness. She states that there was no reason whatsoever given for her departure other than the chance to pursue new opportunities.
