In August, Fernández was hospitalized after suffering a critical fall at his home in Guadalajara on 6 August 2021. Fernández was placed on a ventilator under the intensive care unit and had injured his cervical spine. He had a severe spinal injury that required immediate surgical intervention.

His doctor said, “He is currently under treatment. We are waiting for a response in the recovery of mobility and respiratory effort. At this moment, Mr. Vicente Fernández is stable, awake, with analgesia and sedation, and receiving rehabilitation therapy.”

“We are hopeful that with all we are doing, Mr. Vicente Fernández has a speedy recovery, which is what we all want and wish for,” the doctor added outside the hospital, accompanied by at least six other medical practitioners.

Fernández died on December 12, at the age of 81. His death was announced by his family but they did not give the cause of death but the singer had been hospitalized since August.

A post on the singer’s Instagram page said, “Rest in peace, Mr. Vicente Fernández. We regret to inform you of his death on Sunday, December 12 at 6:15 a.m. It was an honor and great pride to share with everyone a great musical career and to give everything to his audience.
