Marius Payton Ill/Brain

After noticing frequent headaches and failure to pronounce certain words on the teleprompter, Payton and his wife visited a hospital where they discovered that he had near-total blockage in a major artery in his brain. The blockage prevented blood from going to half his brain.

Initially, the doctors didn’t discover the blockage till the doctors knew of his father’s fatal brain hemorrhage. They then ordered a brain scan which exposed a 70 percent blockage in an artery leading to his brain. He underwent an experimental procedure to improve blood flow around the artery blockage and into his brain after waiting for months to get into the program.

In 2017, he started undergoing external counterpulsation which would increase blood flow to the heart and brain. The treatment spanned an hour a day each weekday for 35 days. Within a few days, the headaches subsided, he could pronounce certain words, and the new scans showed blood flowing throughout his brain.
