Mark Fryklund Biography

Mark Fryklund is an American photojournalist and First Alert storm chaser who is working at KOCO 5 News. He joined the KOCO 5 News team in September 1984, after previously working at KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas where he served as a photojournalist.

Mark Fryklund Education

In 1974, he joined Gustavus Adolphus College. While he was there, he worked at the school’s newspaper as a photographer. In addition, he also created independent study courses in photography. In 1977, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English, English, a minor in Photography and filmmaking.

Fryklund currently working at KOCO 5 News where he serves as a photojournalist and First Alert storm chaser. He is a 40-year veteran of television news. Mark started his career first at KBJR-TV in Duluth, Minnesota. Prior to accepting a position as a photojournalist at KOCO 5 News in 1984, he worked at KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas as a photojournalist.

In 1996, Fryklund started reporting weather events regularly. Since then he has been working to upgrade his skills at storm chasing by going through storm spotter training courses through the National Weather Service every year. He as well learns from meteorologists at KOCO. His most memorable moment of storm chasing was in May of 2011 while following the tornado which eventually struck Piedmont.

Fryklund and the reporter mastered the storm near Hinton and went after it as it crossed Interstate 40. The tornado was wrapped in rain, so it was not visible. Although they were close enough to feel the storm’s force, which almost lifted their truck off the ground.

They waited for the storm to pass across the interstate, then moved at a safe distance. As they headed east on the interstate, there was a semi-trailer on its side less than a mile from where they had stopped earlier. The tornado hurt no one, so they kept on following the storm while broadcasting live from their vehicle. He is thrilled about storm chasing simply because it offers him a chance to use his training to benefit the public in times of weather emergencies.

He knows that people depend on local news reports of storms to keep them safe. Fryklund feels that KOCO is devoted to keeping the viewers informed when the weather turns bad. Fryklund is a licensed drone pilot.

During his leisure, he loves carpentry and chasing storms. He as well enjoys camping and fishing with his family. He is a member of Quail Springs Baptist Church, where he serves on the audio/visual team and teaches third-grade Sunday school.
