Mark Tamayo Biography

Mark Tamayo is an American Emmy Award-winning meteorologist working for KTVU San Francisco, CA. He has been working for the station since August 2008.

Mark Tamayo Education

Tamayo studied and graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with his first degree in journalism. While he was studying he also worked in the news department on campus, most of the stories they covered involved the environment which picked his interest so he dabbled in some of the science classes as he was wrapping up his final year in the journalism program. He then spent 3 more years working toward a second degree, in Meteorology, at San Francisco State University.

Tamayo is a meteorologist at KTVU. His career in news started in Eureka at KVIQ-TV, where he helped launch a morning newscast. He then got another job offer in  Steinbeck Country at KSBW-TV in Salinas and after that, he was hired at KRON-TV and served as a morning newscast and produced environmental reports.

Mark joined KTVU in 2008 and during this time at KTVU he has won two Emmys for best weather reporting and a third one for contribution to the Napa earthquake coverage. I have reported on environmental topics ranging from fire science research to the latest NASA technology to monitor changing snow conditions in the Sierra.

When he is not working his curiosity continues to push him to learn more about weather phenomena, He loves bringing weather lessons to the classroom in Bay Area schools. Mark found a way that makes science fun and exciting for the local students. He was one of the projects leads to help coordinate the first-ever Weather Education Day with the Oakland Athletics in 2019 and they hosted over 2000 students at the Oakland Coliseum.
