Marlei Martinez Biography

Marlei Martinez is an American 4-time Emmy Award-Winning Anchor/Reporter/Producer working with WESH Channel 2 News in Orlando, Florida serving the station as a Reporter. She has been working with the station since January 2021.

Marlei Martinez Career

Martinez works with WESH Channel 2 News where she serves the station as a News Reporter. Prior to joining KCRA 3 News, she was working with KCRA 3 News where she was serving the station as a reporter in Sacramento, California. He has also previously worked with WVTM 13 News in Birmingham, Alabama where she was serving the station as a reporter/fill-in anchor. Martinez states that she moved into local news after being a managing producer at CNN and producer at ABC News networks in New York City.

Her reporting journey has brought her to the front lines of California’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state History, the streets of Birmingham where gun violence runs rampant, and to the Camp Fire in Paradise. During one sunny afternoon in Alabama, she and her photographer found themselves caught in the crossfire while interviewing a mother on the 20th anniversary of her son’s cold case. The team dodged gunfire at the very spot where her son was killed in a drive-by shooting about 20 years before the same day.

Prior to reporting, she was working as a managing producer at CNN’s morning show, New Day. Being a senior producer of the overnight team, she approved all reporter scripts and screened all stories before they went to air. Previously, she was producing daily and long-form stories both in the field and in the newsroom for CNN and ABC News networks.

Through her coverage, she has been able to go to the White House to produce a sit-down interview with President Barack Obama, to the gates of Buckingham Palace for Prince George’s birth in London, and to the bayous of Louisiana to chat with the cast of Duck Dynasty. Asides from this, she has traveled with the networks’ anchors and reporters to tell people’s stories from Canada to Jamaica.

For her, this is a return to Florida. She was raised in Brevard County while her father served at St. Patrick Air Force Base on the emergency management team for both hurricane response and Cape Canaveral shuttle launches. Being a military daughter, she counts it a privilege to call California, Georgia, Florida, the Philippines, Colorado,  New York, and the Azores home.

She is a proud graduate of the S.I Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and is a proud member of the Asian American Journalists Association. Away from work, she enjoys traveling, dancing, eating, and reading.
