Maya Wiley is a civil rights activist, lawyer, and professor from the Uniates known for serving as counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and chaired the Civilian Complaint Review Board. Wiley worked in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York’s Civil Division.

Wiley worked in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York’s Civil Division. She worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Open Society Institute before being appointed counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014. Wiley served as de Blasio’s counsel for two and a half years, during which time she became known for coining the term “agents of the city” in order to prevent public disclosure of de Blasio’s communications with lobbyists. She also founded and led the Center for Social Inclusion, a national policy strategy organization dedicated to the abolition of structural racism.

Wiley was mentioned as a possible NAACP president in 2013, but the position went to Cornell William Brooks instead. She has taught at The New School and has appeared as a political and legal analyst on MSNBC. Wiley announced her candidacy for mayor of New York City in the 2021 election in October 2020. She had raised over $720,000 from donors, spent approximately $404,000 on her campaign, and had approximately $316,000 remaining as of mid-January 2021.
