Melanie Newman Biography

Melanie Newman is a prominent American radio and television play-by-play broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles of MLB (Major League Baseball) and national Friday Night Baseball broadcasts on Apple TV+. She is the first woman to be a play-by-play announcer for the Orioles and one of only four female play-by-play broadcasters active in MLB. She has been honored with various awards and honors including; Troy’s Woman of the Year, Miss Troy USA, Alpha Epsilon Rho Scholar of the Year, and USA Petite Miss 2013.

She is also a Sports Reporter for ESPN for ESPN since March 2019, where she is the reporter for the World Axe Throwing League (WTL) on ESPN. Since November 2018, she has been a Reporter at GameDay Radio. There, she is a sideline reporter for events including the Vegas, Frisco, Birmingham, and First Responders bowls. Since April 2017, she has been working for ACC Network Extra as a Sideline Reporter.

Also, she has been working for Major League Baseball in two roles. Since October 2015, in the Advanced Media and from August 2016 to November 2016, in the Media Communications Coordinator, at Arizona Fall League. Since May 2017, she has been a Sideline Reporter at Tupelo Raycom in Lexington, South Carolina. From February 2019 to February 2020, she was a Broadcaster for the Salem Red Sox. Prior to that, she was an In-Game Host at Troy University from August 2017 to January 2019. From January 2018 to October 2018, she was a Broadcaster at Frisco RoughRiders. Before then, she worked for WKSY-TV as a Host from July 2017 to February 2018. She was then an OPn-Field Host and broadcaster for the Mobile BayBears Baseball from August 2014 to November 2015.

From May 2012 to June 2014, she was a Sideline Reporter for the Atlantic Sun Conference. For one year and ten months, she worked at Troy University in two roles. First, as a Play-by-Play Announcer from August 2011 to May 2013, and second as a SID Student Assistant from August 2011 to May 2013. She teamed up with Jessica Mendoza on September 29, 2021, to call a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres for ESPN. This marked the first time that an all-female broadcast team called a nationally televised Major League Baseball game. In the 2022 MLB season, she became the lead play-by-play announcer for Apple TV+ Friday Night Baseball. In 2023, she was one of 3 commentators for the BBC’s coverage of MLB’s London Series.
