Melissa Harrison is an American anchor and reporter working for NBC 5 DFW. She has specialized in a wide area of journalism including visual storytelling, radio news anchoring/reporting, and mobile journalism among other areas.

After graduating from high school and earning her High School Diploma, she had to further her education. In 2004, she moved to New York City to earn her Master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She also earned her Bachelor’s degree from Baylor University.

Harrison is a bilingual anchor and reporter with over two decades of journalism experience. She is glad to return to her roots and to cover news in North Texas. Her journalism career started at WACO the NBC affiliate. While there, she served as an executive producer. After some time, she landed her first on-air job in Abilene.
During her time there, she served at KRBC-TV where she co-anchored the evening 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts. Harrison is much devoted to her career, she went on to report at WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS. While there, she covered stories including the Pearl High School shooting trial.
After working there for quite some time, she headed to Birmingham, AL. While there, she got an opportunity to work for WBRC-TV as a reporter and anchor. She later returned to North Texas when she joined the team at WFAA-TV. During her working time there, she served the station as a weekend morning anchor and weekday reporter.
She also covered major stories including the D.C. Sniper attacks and the Texas Seven Escape Search. Her areas of expertise include visual storytelling, podcasting, radio news anchoring/reporting, international news gathering, mobile journalism, and TV news anchoring/reporting.
Her dissertation focused on grief and traumatic loss and included the stories of people she interviewed over the years. She continued her career in television news as a reporter at WNBC-TV and as a writer at ABC’s World News Tonight while in New York City. After returning to North Texas in 2015, she worked as a freelance reporter for NBC 5. This was before she transitioned into radio and began working as a morning drive anchor at KRLD-AM. Her career also took her to KCEN-TV to work as a news producer from 1995 to 1996.
