Mike Gooding is an American journalist working for 13News Now as a senior military and political reporter. He joined the station in 1985 and has served the station for more than 3 and a half decades.

Gooding attended Old Dominion University in 1977 after completing his high school studies at Annandale High School in Fairfax County. When he finished his studies in 1985, he became a graduate and attained a Bachelor’s degree. During his time in college, he worked for the student newspaper, The Mace & Crown, as an Editor-in-Chief.

Extensively, he has traveled globally to report on military affairs. For example, he broadcasted Operation Southern Watch which imposed a U.N. no-fly zone over Iraq from Bahrain and USS Nimitz in 1997 and Saudi Arabia in 1998. Also, he broadcasted the NATO air strike campaign in Kosovo from the Adriatic Sea and Albania in 1999(Operation Allied Force), and Operation Enduring Freedom where the U.S.-led air strikes against al Qaida in Afghanistan from USS Enterprise and USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Persian Gulf in 2001.
Gooding reported from USS Harry S. Truman in Eastern Med, off Cyprus in 2003 and from Balad, Iraq, in 2004 about Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Virginia Association of Broadcasters awarded him its George A. Bowles, Jr. Award for Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News in 2013.
The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences granted him an Emmy for a News Special dubbed “BRAC Battle: Target Hampton Roads” in 2006. He documented the U.S. Air Force Operations in Saudi Arabia in 1999 in the “Stretched Too Thin.”
Additionally, he did a show dubbed “The Healing Journey” that details the U.S. Army search for M.I.A. remains in Vietnam in 2000. Moreover, he did pieces dubbed “20th Annual Navy Christmas” in 2006, “Navy Christmas at Home and Abroad” in 2007, and “Sequestration: Finding our Future” in 2014. Also, he did a military special dubbed “A Century of Service, Naval Station Norfolk, Then and Now” in 2018. For all these pieces, he received Emmy nominations. In 2007, he attained the 2007 Virginia Associated Press Meritorious Award for his 30-minute special “Final Flight of the F-14.”
The Virginia Associated Press awarded him in 2006 for his series, “Gitmo: An Inside Look,” which surveyed how War on Terrorism prisoners are divided and dealt with at Camp Delta at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Coastal Virginia Magazine named him the “Best Local TV News People’s Choice” award winner in 2019.
Gooding has broadcasted national political conventions, many sittings of the Virginia General Assembly, Virginia gubernatorial inaugurations, and presidential inaugurations. Also, he served the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association as its president twice.
