Mike Pereira is a previous American football official and prior Vice President of Officiating for the National Football League (NFL) who serves as the Head of Officiating for the United States Football League. Since 2010, he has worked for Fox Sports as a rules analyst. Through his work as a rule analyst, he gained the moniker “Mikey Rule Books.”

Of Portuguese ancestry, Pereira was born to Al and Lydia Pereira. They raised him in Stockton, California alongside his older sister Linda. His father, Als served as a head linesman with the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Pereira credits his father for teaching him football games. From 1970 to 1972, Pereira served Santa Clara University as a baseball player. Alongside his parents, he opened golf equipment and an athletic shoe store in his 30s. His parents had divorced at the time.

Heavily, he is involved with Battlefields to Ballfields, a charitable organization devoted to retiring or returning veterans that desire to serve as sports referees. Gail’s father, Roy Snyder served in WWll and spent 16 months in Stalag 17. Unfortunately, he passed away in June 2022 at the age of 101. Pereira seemed to have a close relationship as he often posted him on his Instagram account. After his passing, Pereira posted“…RIP my friend, my hero. You will be missed by many..” In 1975, Pereira was diagnosed with testicular cancer and colon cancer in 2007 thus making him a two-time cancer survivor.

Pereira serves FOX NFL alongside play-by-play announcer, Kevin Burkhardt, analyst, Greg Olsen, and veteran reporters, Erin Andrews, and Tom Rinaldi on AMERICA’S GAME OF THE WEEK on FOX. He joined FOX Sports in 2010 and has served the station for more than a decade. When he joined the station, he initially served as a multi-platform NFL and college football rules analyst. Also, he serves the FOX NFL SUNDAY pregame program as a regular contributor. Aside from that, he contributes to selected FOX College Football game coverage.

Previously, he served as Vice President of NFL Officiating retiring in 2009 after serving the league for 14 years. Additionally, he uses his background with the NFL to share with viewers the process of generating and reviewing officials’ calls on the field.

Since 1982, he’s been involved in football when he served as an NCAA Division I official. For 14 years, he officiated college football starting with nine years in the Big West Conference (1982 to 1991) and five years in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) (1992 to 1996). During his stint there, he officiated eight postseason Bowl Games. For example, the Aloha Bowl and Cotton Bowl (twice each), Gator Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Holiday Bowl, and Freedom Bowl. In 1996, he served NFL as a sideline judge meanwhile serving as a supervisor of officials for the WAC.

Two years later, he earned a promotion to NFL Supervisor of Officiating in 1998. In 2001, he served as the Director of Officiating for the NFL before his promotion to Vice President of NFL Officiating in 2004. Pereira debuted “BATTLEFIELDS TO BALLFIELDS,” a foundation that grants scholarships to veterans of the United States Armed Forces in February 2017. The foundation’s aim is to give veterans a chance to integrate back into their community through officiating.

On Sunday, February 12, 2023, Pereira will serve Super Bowl LVII as the rule analyst for Super Bowl LVII where the kickoff time is 4:30 p.m. MST (UTC-7) at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Further, Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi will serve as the sideline reporters. This will serve as the initial time Super Bowl assignment for Fox’s broadcast team of Greg Olsen and Kevin Burkhardt after Joe Buck and Troy Aikman departed for ABC/ESPN and Monday Night Football. Additionally, it serves as the final game to be covered under the current NFL television contract.
