Mike Pereira is a previous American football official and prior Vice President of Officiating for the National Football League (NFL) who serves as the Head of Officiating for the United States Football League. Since 2010, he has worked for Fox Sports as a rules analyst. Through his work as a rule analyst, he gained the moniker “Mikey Rule Books.”

Of Portuguese ancestry, Pereira was born to Al and Lydia Pereira. They raised him in Stockton, California alongside his older sister Linda. His father, Als served as a head linesman with the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Pereira credits his father for teaching him football games. From 1970 to 1972, Pereira served Santa Clara University as a baseball player. Alongside his parents, he opened golf equipment and an athletic shoe store in his 30s. His parents had divorced at the time.

Heavily, he is involved with Battlefields to Ballfields, a charitable organization devoted to retiring or returning veterans that desire to serve as sports referees. Gail’s father, Roy Snyder served in WWll and spent 16 months in Stalag 17. Unfortunately, he passed away in June 2022 at the age of 101. Pereira seemed to have a close relationship as he often posted him on his Instagram account. After his passing, Pereira posted“…RIP my friend, my hero. You will be missed by many..” In 1975, Pereira was diagnosed with testicular cancer and colon cancer in 2007 thus making him a two-time cancer survivor.

Since 1982, he’s been involved in football when he served as an NCAA Division I official. For 14 years, he officiated college football starting with nine years in the Big West Conference (1982 to 1991) and five years in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) (1992 to 1996). During his stint there, he officiated eight postseason Bowl Games. For example, the Aloha Bowl and Cotton Bowl (twice each), Gator Bowl, Citrus Bowl, Holiday Bowl, and Freedom Bowl. In 1996, he served NFL as a sideline judge meanwhile serving as a supervisor of officials for the WAC.

Two years later, he earned a promotion to NFL Supervisor of Officiating in 1998. In 2001, he served as the Director of Officiating for the NFL before his promotion to Vice President of NFL Officiating in 2004. Pereira debuted “BATTLEFIELDS TO BALLFIELDS,” a foundation that grants scholarships to veterans of the United States Armed Forces in February 2017. The foundation’s aim is to give veterans a chance to integrate back into their community through officiating.
