Ross joined Loyola University in New Orleans in 1976 when he finished his high school education. In 1980, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Arts degree in Communications and Broadcast News. While there, he worked as a full-time staff announcer at a local radio station. Also, he worked for Loyola’s campus radio station as the general manager. After graduating college, he worked as an instructor in radio production and on-air techniques.

His interest in broadcasting started when he was in New York City. While in 7th grade, he met some of the most renowned DJs and radio newscasters in New York since his friend’s father had connections with NYC’s biggest radio stations.
After graduating college, Ross related to Baton Rouge where he first worked in radio news at WJBO-AM. Next, he worked as a reporter for WAFB in 1981 before working for WBRZ as an environmental reporter and weekend anchor.
In 1986, Ross moved to New Orleans where he worked for WWL-A.M. as anchor of a three-hour all news program in the afternoon. In 1988, he moved to WWL-TV where he broadcasted city hall, the state legislature, and many hurricanes including Hurricane Andrew. He started working off-screen at WWL in 1995 where he worked as an assignment editor and directed news for a year. The following year, he got a promotion and started working in the Northshore Bureau of South Louisiana. For broadcasting Hurricane Katrina, he alongside WWL won the George Foster Peabody Award, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, and a national Edward R. Murrow Award.
During his career, he has received a number of awards including the 2019 Alaska Broadcasters Association Broadcaster of the Year Award and a National Murrow Award in 2005. In 2007, he served as an inductee of the NATAS NW Emmy’s Silver Circle.
