Noah Ringer Career

While training at the ATA Martial Arts in Carrollton, Ringer had a shaved head. This led to his fellow students nicknaming him “Avatar” after the character Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the animated TV series. After Eric Pechacek, his taekwondo instructor, watched the show, he saw the resemblance between Ringer and Aang and introduced him to the show.

The ATA sent Pechacek an email in July 2008, inviting any interested students to audition for the role of Aang in The Last Airbender. At Pechacek’s persuasion, Ringer auditioned for the role, adorning Aang’s attire, which was his Halloween costume from the previous year. Additionally, he performed an XMA Jahng Bong routine and recited a few lines.

Ringer went to Philadelphia to meet with director M. Night Shyamalan one month after sending his audition video, securing the role one month after the meeting. For one month, he prepared for the role, where he studied with director Linda Seto at the Dallas Young Actors Studio. He also started training in different types of martial arts. In March 2011, he won a nomination for the Young Artist Best Performance In A Feature Film By A Leading Young Actor Award. In May of that same year, he won the 3rd Annual TheSkyKid.Com “Coming of Age” Best Actor Movie Award. He later starred as Emmett Taggart in Cowboys & Aliens.

Martial arts

Ringer’s mother enrolled him at the ATA Martial Arts in Carrollton, Texas, when he was 10 years old. Showing early promise, he soon started participating in tournaments. At the age of 12, he earned his first degree black belt in December 2008.

Ringer competed in his first ATA tournament, the World Championships in Arkansas, winning first place in every category he competed in. After watching the routines at that tournament, he began training in Extreme Martial Arts, or XMA, where he choreographed his moves and chose his music. He gained proficiency with multiple Eastern weapons, including the bō staff, which his character Aang uses.

During his first two years with the ATA, Ringer participated in 25 tournaments, winning 100 medals, of which 80 were gold. In February 2008, he won the Competitor of the Year Award for the Texas area. Additionally, he obtained the 2008-2009 title of Texas State Champion in five categories, including Sparring, X-Treme Forms, Traditional Forms, Traditional Weapons, and X-Treme Weapons.

Ringer also trained in American taekwondo, receiving his second-degree black belt in October 2010. He taught other students in the ATA as part of the Leadership Program. Additionally, he does gymnastics and started to learn Choy Li Fut kung fu.
