Paul LaGrone Hair Loss/Health

LaGrone’s hair loss has been caused by Alopecia Areata. Since the age of 20, he has struggled with hair loss and undergone treatments and procedures such as Rogaine, Propecia, Finestride, and even a hair transplant. After a night out with his wife, he noticed his hair falling off during a bath.

He googled the symptoms, and ailments such as cancer, lupus, and thyroid conditions came up. Next, he visited a dermatologist, who diagnosed his condition as Alopecia. His immune system attacked his hair follicles, which caused him to lose hair on his scalp and face rapidly for some reason.

The condition can be caused by diet, environment, stress, and genetics. Also, it lacks a cure. Due to the nature of his work, there is constant pressure to meet deadlines, which causes him stress as well as poor eating and sleeping habits.

After his diagnosis, he started looking for treatment methods, and his doctor recommended steroid shots. Thus, he began getting steroid shots into his scalp. The shots would trick his immune system into not attacking his hair.

Initially, he started with 3 or 4 shots and later evolved to 10 shots a month, 20 shots a month after, and even 40 shots into my scalp every 3 to 4 weeks. As a result, he experienced dizziness, pain, and bleeding. With all this, he still went to work and would feel faint throughout his time at work.

The shots worked for a while and then broke out a week later. He then came to the realization that he should stop getting the shots before he fainted on live TV. Still, he didn’t want to shave his hair. Thus, he began wearing wigs.

But this was not a long-term answer as it was high maintenance, costly, and not convenient as he would break a sweat playing with his sons. Also, it was not convenient with his on-screen work, as the camera would pick up any minor imperfection. At this point, he decided to shave his hair and start his hair-growing process.

However, there were scars left due to the disease. Thus, he decided to do micro pigmentation, i.e., a hair tattoo. He advises anyone struggling with the condition to reach out to him and know that they are not alone. Also, he advises them to take their time, not to make the mistakes he did, and not to rush into treatments, and it will all work out.
