Preston Mitchum is an eminent American attorney, queer advocate, activist, and Adjunct Professor of Law at America University Washington College of Law. He is the Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs with The Trevor Project. This is the world’s suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning young people.
He is the Founder & Principal of PDM Consulting. Preston was the first openly LGBTQ Chair of the Washington Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. In 2021, he was voted D.C’s Most Committed Activist by Washington Blade readers and in 2022 he was the runner-up. Before joining Advocates, he served as the senior policy analyst at the Centre for Health and Gender Equality (CHANGE). There, he provided in-depth analysis of new data, policies, and programs across SRHR-including HIV and AIDS, maternal health, family planning, and gender-based violence.
In addition, he was a judicial law clerk at the D.C. Superior Court to the Honorable S. Pamela Gray and the Honorable Errol R. Arthur and was a Policy Analyst at the Centre for American Progress (CAP).
Currently, he serves as chair of the Washington Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. And is an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and is an accomplished author publishing both scholarly work and social commentary for many online outlets. These include; The Atlantic, Think Progress, The Root, Slate.com, theGrio, Huffington Post, and others. Moreover, he has appeared on Al Jazeera, MSNBC, and Fox News.
