Before Carter joined “Good Times” he was starring in the Broadway musical “Raisin” where he was based on “A Raisin in the Sun” (the Lorraine Hansberry drama). He was noted in the credits during season 1. Carter is also known for The Groomsmen (2006) and Broadway Damage (1997). In 1997, he was nominated for a Gold Medal for “Favorite Child Star.”

Carter began his acting career when he was at the tender age of 9, on Broadway where he starred in the musical “The Me Nobody Knows.” After runs in “Via Galactica”, “Dude”, and “Tough To Get Help”, Carter got his breakout role in Raisin where he portrayed Travis Younger. For Most Promising Performer, he was awarded the 1973 Drama Desk Award. Also for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, he was nominated for the 1974 Tony Award and awarded the 1974 Theatre World Award.
