Ray Lucas Biography

Ray Lucas is an American Analyst/former Footballer who played for the National Football League and is working as a studio analyst for the show Jets Nation on New York City-based sports network SportsNet New York. Previously, he played for three teams, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots. This was during his seven-year career between 1996 and 2002.

Lucas is working as a studio analyst for the show Jets Nation on New York City-based sports network SportsNet New Yor(SNY). He has spent most of his lifetime career working in the NFL backup role. Back in the 1999 NFL season, after quarterback Vinny Testaverde was injured in the first game of the season, Mirer took the helm after winning four ten games. Asides from this, he took over afterward and lost his first two starts and won his next four games giving the Jets an 8-8 record for the season.

He was a favorite player of Bill Parcells during Parcells’ time in New England and with the Jets. He was also one of the players Parcells eventually brought over from the Patriots to the Jets. Later on, Parcells introduced him in 1997 by putting him in at quarterback with second-string QB Neil O’Donnell lined up at wide receiver.

Asides from this, he set up in a shotgun formation and ran the ball himself for about 15 yards while befuddling the Vikings’ defense in a play that eventually led to a Jets victory. Asides from this, he attempted an NFL pass in Week 17 of 1997 against the Detroit Lions. He then went 3 of 3 for 28 yards before throwing an interception.

He was later called for a personal foul while making the tackle on the interception return. Lucas started in the Jets’ 1999 preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. Parcells had him in the running for the starting and second-string quarterback role during the season. After starting QB Vinny Testaverde, he was injured in the first game of the season after he started several games.

After Lucas’ success with the Jets, he spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. As the team’s backup quarterback, he did not see much playing during the 2001 season after having only three pass attempts. During the 2002 season, they got an opportunity to start six games.

As a result of his large size, he was the quarterback of choice during goal-line and some red-zone situations. Later on, in 2002, The Dolphins began the 2002 season 5-1. Later on, after starting quarterback Jay Fiedler broke his thumb during a Monday night game against Denver, he was trusted to quarterback the Dolphins for the next six games. In this game, he amassed 4 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a 69.9 QB rating.

Later on, after his success with the jets, he spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. As the team’s backup quarterback, he did not see much playing during the 2001 season. Asides from this, he holds the unenviable distinction of the worst single-game quarterback performance by any Dolphin. During one game on the 20th of October 2002, in one game against Buffalo, he was responsible for 6 turnovers: 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Later on, he completed 13 passes to Dolphin receivers. Nate Clements, Buffalo Cornerback, caught the most passes.

Ray Lucas Post-career/Broadcasting career

The 28th of March 2008 saw Lucas being named the Hudson County Sports HJall of Fame. Back in the year 2013, he co-wrote the book Under Pressure: How Playing Football Almost Cost Me Everything and Why’d I’s Do It All Again. Back in the month of March 2018, he was named Executive Director of the Harrison New Jersey Housing Authority serving in the same capacity that his father did for about 27 years.

After a number of years, he worked for SportsNet New York as an analyst for Jets programs. This includes pre-game and post-game shows and weekly updates before leaving in the year 2020. Later on in 22009, he went on to join the Rutgers Football Radio Network serving the station as a color analyst. This is a role he no longer has in 2021 as he decided to coach his home high school football team.
