Around that time, he found the daily weather map in the New York Times, isobars and all.

While growing up in Connecticut, 100F heat brought images of exotic tropical areas like India, northern Africa, the Middle East, and the U.S. desert southwest. When he was 10, his mom took him to the nearby Weather Bureau. There, he found out that Laredo had reached 100F on February 28, 1940, when he looked through an assembly of climatological data in one of the back rooms. Since that day, he made it his goal to walk Laredo streets at high noon.

In August 1977, Berler walked Laredo streets at noon during his 2-week vacation from KDAL in Duluth, Minnesota. He obtained an Ameripass ticket and traveled to El Centro, California, across and got on a Transportes de Norte bus and through Mazatlan, Guadalajara, Mexico City. In Mexico City, he bought a book with the climatological data for ~800 areas from Servicio Meteorologico. Then, he went to Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo before reaching Laredo by walking across the bridge. That day the temperature was 103F.

Berler was tasked with looking after the instrumentation of the National Weather Service (NWS) and what would later be the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) on June 10, 1985. Since then, he has recorded 6 February days that hit 100F or higher because of the Mexican Plateau Air. In 2011, he recorded 122 days that hit 100 F or higher.
