In 1998, he was named to the University of South Carolina College of Journalism’s “Diamond Circle” joining a national group of esteemed individuals chosen for outstanding contributions to their field. He was named CETA Director of Chesterfield, County, SC in 1980. CETA, The Comprehensive Employment Training Act was a program designed to train workers and provide them with jobs in public service. The program offered to work with low incomes and long-term unemployed as well as summer jobs for low-income high school students.

In addition, he is active in the community. And thus he was named Man of the Year by both the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Florence. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Ray Tanner Foundation. This is an organization founded by USC baseball coach Ray Tanner and his wife Karen to help children in need. Furthermore, he served on the 200 Years of Gamecock Basketball Committee. And has helped plan a celebration and served as the Master of Ceremony for an event honoring former USC basketball players and coaches.

He received his education at McBee High School, the school’s first African-American Valedictorian where he graduated in 1973. After graduating from high school, he attended The University of South Carolina where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1977. He finished his USC career by being named an Outstanding Senior. At USC, he was the President of the USC chapter of The National Pan-Hellenic Council Board(Governing body for all Black fraternities and sororities), Intramural football, basketball, and softball. He works for WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina. He joined WIS-TV as an anchor/reporter. In 1996, he became the station’s Sports Director. From July 1998 to July 1996, he served as an assistant Sports Director for WIS-TV. And since June 1996 he has been working as the station’s Sports Director. Rick started his television career at WPDE-TV in Florence, South Carolina. There, he served as the sports director from July 1981 to July 1988. While working there, he did play-by-play for an ABC telecast of a college football game between South Carolina State and Grambling. He then started his broadcasting job in Hartsville, South Carolina at WHSC Radio as a radio announcer.

In addition to his duties as a disk jockey, he did play-by-play for high school basketball and baseball games. He worked at WHSC Radio from December 1978 to October 1980. From October 1980 to June 1981, he worked as a CETA Director for Chester County, SC. He then worked as a Mapper/Appraiser for Chesterfield County, SC Tax Assessor’s Office from September 1977 to October 1980. In his sports career, he has covered some of the biggest sporting events including The Super Bowl, The 1996 Summer Olympics, The Masters, The Ryder Cup, The World Series, The Daytona 500, The NCAA Basketball tournament, and the NBA Playoffs.
