Sheehan developed an interest in acting while he was in primary school when he played Oliver in Oliver with a Twist. At 14, he won the audition for Song for a Raggy Boy, spending three months in Cork to film. Later, he joined the Laois Open Door theatre group, portraying a crippled boy in a production of The Cripple of Inishmaan.

Sheehan starred in Foreign Exchange when he was 16. Subsequently, he starred in The Clinic, The Tudors, and Young Blades. In 2008, he starred in Rock Rivals, Bitter Sweet, and  Ghostwood. The following month, he won a nomination for a BAFTA Male Supporting Actor Award for his role in the series.

In 2010, Sheehan started playing the role of Darren, a member of gangland Dublin, in Love/Hate. He took on the role because he wanted to work with Stuart Carolan and Dave Caffrey. Following his departure from the series, his character’s ubiquitous blue hoodie was donated to the Dunamaise Theater in Portlaoise. His performance in the series won him nominations for an Irish Film and Television Award in 2011 and 2012. He won a nomination for the Irish Film and Television Rising Star Award in 2010.

2010 to present;

In 2011, Sheehan starred as Kay in Season of the Witch opposite Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman. That same year, he starred in Killing Bono and in John Crowley’s production of The Playboy of the Western World at the Old Vic Theatre. He starred in Season 2 of BBC’s Accused, which aired in 2012. The following year, he portrayed Simon Lewis in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Next, he starred in  Anita B., The Road Within, Moonwalkers, and The Messenger. In September 2013, he was honoured by University College Dublin’s Literary and Historical Society.

Sheehan starred as Richard III in Trevor Nunn’s revival of The Wars of the Roses in late 2015. Further, he won the Burke Medal for Contribution to Discourse Through The Arts from the College Historical Society in Trinity College Dublin in October 2015. He starred in Geostorm in 2017 and in the second season of Fortitude. His performance in Fortitude won him a nomination for an Irish Film and Television Award. He starred as Carlos Casagemas in Genius: Picasso and a caricatured version of himself in The Young Offenders Christmas special.

Sheehan also starred in Bad Samaritan, Mute, and Mortal Engines. In 2019, he portrayed Klaus Hargreeves in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. On 15 October 2021, he published his debut novel, Disappearing Act: A Host of Other Characters in 16 Short Stories. He joined the cast of Red Sonja as Draygan in August 2022.

In 2024, Sheehan starred as Withnail in the world premiere of Withnail and I by Bruce Robinson at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In July of that same year, he starred in Reunion written and directed by Mark O’Rowe for the Galway International Arts Festival.
