Sam Champion is an American Emmy and Peabody award-winning weather anchor at WABC-TV and Good Morning America. He joined Eyewitness News in 1988 as the weekend and 5:00 p.m. weather anchor and later became the main weather anchor for the 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. newscasts.

Champion attended Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia where he graduated in 1979. He then went to Eastern Kentucky University where he received his bachelor’s degree in broadcast news and interned at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.

Prior to joining WABC-TV, he was a weekend anchor and news reporter at WPSD-TV in Paducah, KY. Champion started his career as an intern at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2006, he became the weather anchor for Good Morning America. In his capacity as Weather Editor, Champion also built ABC News’s Weather, Climate, and Environment Unit, and oversaw all climate, weather, and environmental coverage and content on all ABC platforms.
Champion became the Managing Editor of the Weather Channel in 2012, where he created and hosted AMHQ, a 4-hour morning show, and 23.5, a climate and science interview program in prime time. In his weather reporting career, he received a Peabody Award for his “Sandy Coverage” and has won four Emmys. In 2019, he returned home to WABC, when he became the weather anchor for Eyewitness News This Morning.
