Scott Sumner Biography

Scott Sumner is an American meteorologist working for DC News Now as a weekend evening meteorologist since joining the station in April 2022. Previously, he worked as a weekend meteorologist at WJCL ABC for more than 3 years.

Sumner joined Kean University in 1988 after finishing high school. In 1992, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Meteorology and Earth Sciences. There, he was on the Varsity Tennis Team and a member of the American Meteorological Society.

The Superstorm of 1993 virtually paralyzed the eastern third of the country, with widespread heavy snows extending from Alabama to New York State.

Sumner was a member of the weather team that earned an Emmy Outstanding Coverage Award for a foreseen Breaking News Story in February 1994. In the fall of 1998, he began serving a local cable TV station in New Jersey called News12 in addition to his duties at WCBS. There, he anchored the weekend weather and had other duties during the week.

Sumner freelanced at WCBS in the new millennium, doing the morning and noon shows. He worked closely with professionals, which gave him great knowledge that helped him refine his craft and advance in meteorology.

Sumner traveled south in the summer of 2005, where he lived in North Carolina, South Carolina, and his latest city, Savannah, Georgia. There, he forecast numerous severe weather events, including Hurricane Matthew. He was a member of a team that won Best Coverage of a Severe Weather Event of Matthew.
