Sean Lock was an English stand-up comedian and actor who was best known for his stand-up comedy and his long-time role on the Channel 4 panel show, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, in which he starred for more than ten years. He began his comedy career as a stand-up comedian, winning the British Comedy Award for Best Live Comic in 2000 and being nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award.

Lock’s early television work included a supporting role in the 1993 series Newman and Baddiel in Pieces alongside Rob Newman and David Baddiel, as well as touring with them as their support act. Lock attributes his comedic style to Frank Skinner and Eddie Izzard. According to popular belief, Lock was the first stand-up comedian to perform at Wembley Stadium as the support act for David Baddiel. However, during an appearance on the show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, David Baddiel revealed that these beliefs are false and that Lock, who was his support act, only appeared in skits in the middle of the show.

Lock appeared in an episode of The World of Lee Evans in 1995, alongside Lee Evans and Phil Daniels, as an escaped murderer. He wrote the screenplay for Andrew Kötting’s 2001 feature film This Filthy Earth, which was based on Émile Zola’s novel La Terre. After seeing his doctor, he was referred to a dermatologist at Guy’s Hospital, in London. He made a full recovery. He passed on in August 2021 from cancer, after being unwell for some time.

Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit, and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy. Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children. Lock will be sorely missed by all that knew him.”
