Sean Lock Biography

Sean Lock was an English stand-up comedian and actor who was best known for his stand-up comedy and his long-time role on the Channel 4 panel show, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, in which he starred for more than ten years. He began his comedy career as a stand-up comedian, winning the British Comedy Award for Best Live Comic in 2000 and being nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award.

Lock’s early television work included a supporting role in the 1993 series Newman and Baddiel in Pieces alongside Rob Newman and David Baddiel, as well as touring with them as their support act. Lock attributes his comedic style to Frank Skinner and Eddie Izzard. According to popular belief, Lock was the first stand-up comedian to perform at Wembley Stadium as the support act for David Baddiel. However, during an appearance on the show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, David Baddiel revealed that these beliefs are false and that Lock, who was his support act, only appeared in skits in the middle of the show.

Lock appeared in an episode of The World of Lee Evans in 1995, alongside Lee Evans and Phil Daniels, as an escaped murderer. He wrote the screenplay for Andrew Kötting’s 2001 feature film This Filthy Earth, which was based on Émile Zola’s novel La Terre. Lock made a cameo appearance in Johnny Vaughan’s Top Buzzer, television’s first “dope opera,” in 2004. He became a regular team captain on the panel game 8 Out of 10 Cats in 2005.

In the spring of 2006, he hosted his own entertainment show, TV Heaven, Telly Hell, on Channel 4. Lock narrated the BBC production World Cup Goals Galore in 2006. In 2008, he co-hosted The Big Fat Quiz of the Year with James Corden. Lock appeared in Channel 4’s Comedy Gala, a benefit show held in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital that was filmed live at The O2 Arena in 2010. He also appeared in a spoof video produced by the housing charity Shelter to highlight the issue of rogue landlords. Sean Lock took over as host of the Dave comedy panel show Argumental from John Sergeant in 2011.

Lock appeared in the fourth episode of Mandy, a BBC television series, in 2019. In the episode, after getting her fired from a Japanese sushi restaurant, he goes on a date with Mandy, which does not go well. Lock also served as a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats (2005–2015) and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (2005–2015).

In 2006, Lock narrated the BBC production World Cup Goals Galore. In 2008, he co-hosted The Big Fat Quiz of the Year with James Corden. Lock has also appeared on a number of popular British television panel shows, including Have I Got News For You, QI, and They Think It’s All Over.

He also appeared as a celebrity guest on The Last Leg. Lock took over as “The Curator” for the second radio series of The Museum of Curiosity in 2009, succeeding Bill Bailey. During an appearance on This Morning in 2013, Lock announced that he would no longer appear on 8 Out of 10 Cats because he felt he had become typecast for appearing on panel shows, joking that people had started approaching him in the street asking, “Are you, Dave?”

In 1990, he was diagnosed with skin cancer attributing the condition to overexposure to the sun while working as a builder in the early 1980s. After seeing his doctor, he was referred to a dermatologist at Guy’s Hospital, in London. He made a full recovery. He passed on in August 2021 from cancer, after being unwell for some time.

A spokesperson for Sean Lock said in a statement, “He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family. Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit, and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy. Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children. Lock will be sorely missed by all that knew him.”
