Boutella pursued a career in acting in 2014 after dancing for 12 years. At first, she deliberately evaded lead role auditions as she wanted to gain more experience by playing supporting roles. She started rehearsing with renowned Spanish choreographer Blanca Li when she was 17 years old. Also, she started dancing in TV shows and films, concert tours, and commercials. She starred as Eva in StreetDance 2.

In 2015, she had her first big film when she starred in Kingsman: The Secret Service which boosted her acting career. A year later, she acted in Star Trek Beyond as Jaylah. Next, she acted in Atomic Blonde as a French secret agent and The Mummy.

In 2018, she started starring in more central roles in films like Climax, HBO’s Fahrenheit 451, and Hotel Artemis. The following year, she appeared in 5 episodes of Amazon Prime’s Modern Love. She starred in the role of the female lead in SAS: Rogue Heroes in 2022. The following year, she starred in Rebel Moon.

Dancing career

Boutella’s family encouraged her to take up classical dance education at the age of 5. While growing up in Paris, she experienced various forms of dance, especially hip-hop and street dance. She was intrigued by the dance since it offered her more freedom as compared to the more disciplined styles of ballet and gymnastics.

In 2006, Boutella and the Vagabond Crew secured the Battle of the Year Award. She was also involved in a spin-off group called “Chiennes de Vie and Aphrodites.” The following year, Jamie King picked her choreography for Nike Women’s “Keep Up” campaign, thus she had a breakthrough. This boosted her career and she started working with stars like Rihanna and Madonna. For instance, she worked with Madonna’s Confessions Tour. She said that Madonna helped her to learn English.

Boutella was successful in auditioning for Michael Jackson’s This Is It concerts. However, she couldn’t attend because of the lengthening of the Madonna tour new dates overlapped with Jackson’s tour. In 2011, she appeared as the main character in Michael Jackson’s music video for “Hollywood Tonight.”
