Wasu is currently working at ABC 15 News where she serves as a multi-media journalist. She began her job while still in college at the University of California, San Diego after an internship that turned out to be a news writing job. Wasu covered adventures took her to Tennessee, Ohio, Montana, Arizona, and Tucson. She has reported flooding, ice storms, blizzards, and tornadoes. Some of her great stories are witnessing two executions of death row inmates in the State of Arizona, walking the same trails used by drug smugglers in the unforgiving Sonoran desert, and a coal mining disaster in the Appalachian Mountains.
Wasu has won three Edward R. Murrow awards, a Rocky Mountain Regional Emmy for hard news coverage and feature reporting, and two Associated Press awards. The award-winning stories took her to Nogales, Mexico, where she interviewed deported migrants sleeping in the tunnels and washes, waiting for night to fall so they could try to go back into the United States again secretively.
She worked a day in and day out to win the trust of human trafficking survivors and revealed a side of Tucson nightlife many did not know existed. She also won a feature reporting award for talking to the families of some of the youngest medical marijuana cardholders in Arizona, many of them are babies who suffered dozens of seizures a week. In 2015, Sonu was appreciated with a Paladin Community Service Award for the work she did in revealing human trafficking to the community.n She is a first-generation American citizen.
