Steve LaPointe is an American meteorologist working for WRGB as the chief meteorologist since he was promoted in February 1995. He forecasts on CBS6 news Mondays through Fridays at 5, 5:30, 6, and 6:30 p.m., the 10 p.m. newscast on CW15, as well as at 11 p.m. on CBS6. LaPointe’s interest in the weather started when he was a young child growing up in Big Flats, New York, outside of Corning. He used to run outside during thunderstorms. That interest blossomed after he witnessed firsthand the blizzard of ’78 in southern New Hampshire, Hurricane Belle in southern New England in 1976, and the flood of June 1972 caused by the torrential rains from former Hurricane Agnes, the most devastating floods on record in the Northeast.
After receiving his degree, LaPointe launched his TV career as an emergency fill-in guy for WMUR in Manchester. Within two weeks after serving WMUR, WSAV hired him as a full-time weather reporter in Savannah in February 1990. He then joined CBS6 news on April 22, 1991.

As WRGB’s chief meteorologist, LaPointe has engaged his viewers with precise weather forecasts, crucial severe weather coverage, and special educational weather programming for the past twenty-five years. Besides broadcasting, he works as a full member of the American Meteorological Society, obtaining the AMS Television Seal of approval in 1991. He obtained the organization’s CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) Seal in April 2007.

During his career, LaPointe has won multiple awards, including the 1993 New York State Associated Press Outstanding Newscast Award for broadcasting the blizzard of 1993. He won another New York State Associated Press Best Newscast Coverage Award in 1995 for broadcasting the severe weather outbreak on Memorial Day, which caused the devastating family of tornadoes that impacted Hillsdale and Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
LaPointe won a nomination for a New York State Emmy Outstanding On-camera Achievement Award in the spring of 1999 for his continuous broadcast of the Mechanicville-Stillwater tornado outbreak on Memorial Day 1998. That coverage helped inform and safeguard residents during the event.
LaPointe won a 2004 New York State Emmy Outstanding Educational Programming Award for his role in establishing the half-hour severe weather special, Storm Warning, that aired in the spring of 2003. He then worked as a co-producer, director, and writer of Storm Warning 2 in the spring of 2004, winning him a New York State Broadcasters Best Educational Program Award. In 2014, he won a nomination for a New York State Emmy Award for broadcast excellence in the category of weather.
