Summer Knowles is an American journalist working for WESH as a co-anchor of WESH 2 News at 6 and 11 p.m. since January 2023. Before that role, she co-anchored WESH 2 News at 4, 6, and 11 p.m. She joined the station in January 2015 as a weekend evening anchor and has served the station for over half a decade.

Knowles joined the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill in 2000 when she finished her high school education. In 2004, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a Spanish minor.

Since coming to Central Florida, Knowles has secured several influential interviews including those with local Congresswoman Val Demings, former US Rep. Corrine Brown before her fraud conviction, Stacey Abrams, Vice President Mike Pence, and presidential candidate Joe Biden briefly before the presidential election.
Knowles holds most pride in her work following George Floyd’s death on the Project Community: Crusade for Change news documentary. The documentary won her an Edward R. Murrow award in 2021. She is also proud of her series highlighting COVID-19’s effects on local prisons and their families at the beginning of the pandemic.
Knowles previously worked as a reporter and fill-in anchor at CBS 4 News in Miami. There, she broadcasted multiple national stories such as Fangate(the 2014 Florida Gubernatorial debate between Gov. Rick Scott and Gov. Charlie Crist), the US’s desire to normalize US/Cuba relations, the George Zimmerman case, and the liberation of Alan Gross.
Briefly, after the Zimmerman case closed, Knowles secured the initial TV interview with Rachel Jeantel, a teen who talked with Trayvon Martin the night he died. Knowles’ career began when she worked as a news writer and overnight producer for NBC News Channel in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Following her time in Charlotte, Knowles secured her first on-air job, reporting in Charlottesville, Virginia. She then reported for KTVI in St. Louis, WPEC in West Palm Beach, and KSLA News 12 in Shreveport. She was also a morning and afternoon anchor at KSLA.
Knowles previously worked on the board of directors of the YMCA Achievers. She also worked with public school literacy programs. She works as a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE).
Knowles loves hosting and moderating events including The Women’s Summit on Intersectionality and the African American Chamber of Commerce Eagle Awards. Above all, she loves to speak with and mentor young journalists and those aspiring to become journalists.
