Susan Shaw Biography

Susan Shaw is an American journalist working for WOOD as the main news anchor of News 8 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. She joined the station in October 1994 and has served the station for more than 2 decades.

Shaw joined Oakland University when she finished her high school education. She later graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. Further, she holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling/Psychology from Western Michigan University.

Shaw works for WOOD as the main news anchor of News 8 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. In this role, she cautions her views about live-breaking stories every day. She has been in West Michigan for more than 20 years. During this time, she has broadcasted big news occasions including the demise of Grand Rapids’ favorite son, President Gerald R. Ford, and later his wife, First Lady Betty Ford.

Shaw has been involved in years of election nights including the elections of Gov. Rick Snyder and the election of Michigan’s first female governor, Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Aside from her role on the anchor desk at WOOD, she is involved with station occasions like the yearly Salvation Army Angel Tree program that gives toys to needy children, The Water Drive for Flint residents affected by lead-tainted water, and Nexstar’s Day of Caring initiative.

Before moving to Grand Rapids, she was in the Saginaw/Flint/Bay City/Midland region serving WNEM TV5 as the main anchor at 6 & 11 p.m. She has also worked for WPDE in Myrtle Beach, WEYI TV25 in Flint, and WWTV 9&10 in Cadillac.

Away from the news, she is on the Bissell Pet Foundation grant committee which helps locate forever homes for shelter animals. She serves on the leadership board of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She supports many charities and organizations all over West Michigan including the “I Understand” non-profit which concentrates on suicide prevention and mental health awareness.

Shaw emcees and hosts events for many organizations including Silent Observer and the Van Andel Institute’s Angels of Excellence program. She is also involved with Inforum and the Michigan Emmy Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She finished disaster preparedness training with the Grand Rapids chapter of the American Red Cross.

Shaw has won awards for working in the community and the TV news industry. Organizations like the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, Associated Press, and the Michigan Emmy Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences have awarded her for her news involvement.

Shaw won an Emmy Award in the category of Best News Anchor in Michigan. In 2018, she won NATAS’s prestigious Silver Circle Award given to individuals who have performed distinguished service in the television industry for 25 years or more.
