Sylvia Perez Biography

Sylvia Perez is an American Emmy Award-Winning Anchor/Reporter working for Fox 32 News as the weekday morning anchor. She has been working for the station since joining in 2016. Prior to joining FOX 32 News, Perez worked at WLS ABC7 where she was a longtime anchor and medical reporter.

Perez studied at the University of Oklahoma, majoring in Radio/TV/Film. In a bold, early move Perez chose an internship with a public television station versus the more typical network affiliate since even then public television was short-staffed. Sylvia covered State Capitol politics with stories appearing on the nightly news before she even graduated. That internship led to positions as a broadcast journalist in a variety of markets across the country, reporting on major stories involving education, politics, medicine, and the military.

Upon graduating, Perez started her career in 1983. Before joining ABC7, she worked in Houston and Amarillo, Texas. Perez also worked in Oklahoma where she won several awards for her reporting. Her interest in medical reporting came when she worked at KPRC-TV in Houston, where she also became the weekend co-anchor. She still does that while in Chicago.

She first joined ABC 7 in June 1989. On June 20, 2013, she was released from WLS-TV after 24 years with the station because they decided to cancel the 11 am newscast. In September 2016, media critic Robert Feder announced on his blog that Sylvia Perez had been hired to anchor the weekend morning newscasts on WFLD-TV. She also reports for the daily 9 p.m. newscast.

Throughout Perez’s career, she has been recognized for her achievements with multiple awards, including Emmys and the Peter Lisagor award, recognizing the best of Chicago journalism given annually by the Chicago Headline Club. Perez was also recognized by the office of the Illinois Secretary of State for Excellence in Broadcasting commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month.

She is generous with her time in supporting several charities in the Chicago area. She has a company named, Sylvia Perez Productions, which specializes in all aspects of event production for non-profits. During her free time, she enjoys gourmet cooking and taking nature hikes on the many trails in and around Chicago.
