Hui went to a Catholic high school and a Catholic junior college. He was a junior college Student Councillor as well as a reservist National Service commissioned officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science from the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Hui worked as the General Manager of an American food and beverage franchise after graduating from university. He was scouted to work for TCS. Tay won the “Best Supporting Actor” award at the 1999 Star Awards for his portrayal of a gang leader in Stepping Out, barely a year after his debut in On the Edge – Mr. Personality. In the Star Awards, he was nominated for Best Actor in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. At the 2012 Star Awards, he received the All-Time Favorite Artiste Award. Last but not least, the Mandarin stage musical Don’t Forget to Say Goodbye. In 2012, he received the All-Time Favorite Artiste award for being one of the top ten most popular male artists of all time. Tay left Mediacorp in 2018. He shifted his focus to acting in China, where he was most recently filming a Chinese drama in which he plays a spy.

He has also performed live on stage numerous times for events such as National Day and New Year’s Day countdowns and has shared the stage with Taiwanese stars Wu Bai and Harlem Yu. Meet the Giants, a Singapore/China co-production, marked Tay’s feature film directorial debut in 2013.
