Tay Ping Hui Biography

Tay Ping Hui is a director and actor from Singapore. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with the basketball film Meeting the Giant.

Tay Ping Hui Education

Hui went to a Catholic high school and a Catholic junior college. He was a junior college Student Councillor as well as a reservist National Service commissioned officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science from the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Hui married a university lecturer in 2010.

Hui worked as the General Manager of an American food and beverage franchise after graduating from university. He was scouted to work for TCS. Tay won the “Best Supporting Actor” award at the 1999 Star Awards for his portrayal of a gang leader in Stepping Out, barely a year after his debut in On the Edge – Mr. Personality. In the Star Awards, he was nominated for Best Actor in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. At the 2012 Star Awards, he received the All-Time Favorite Artiste Award. Tay was voted Media’s Top 5 Popular Ward and was also listed in Lianhe Zaobao’s “Top 50 Most Popular Asian Idol” for five years in a row.

In the China-produced supernatural fantasy television series The Legend and the Hero, he played Huang Feihu. Tay has also appeared in Hong Kong film productions such as Summer Holiday, directed by Jingle Ma, in which he co-starred with Hong Kong actress Sammi Cheng, and “Infernal Affairs II,” in which he co-starred with Anthony Wong and Francis Ng. Last but not least, the Mandarin stage musical Don’t Forget to Say Goodbye. In 2012, he received the All-Time Favorite Artiste award for being one of the top ten most popular male artists of all time. Tay left Mediacorp in 2018. He shifted his focus to acting in China, where he was most recently filming a Chinese drama in which he plays a spy.

He has also performed live on stage numerous times for events such as National Day and New Year’s Day countdowns and has shared the stage with Taiwanese stars Wu Bai and Harlem Yu. Meet the Giants, a Singapore/China co-production, marked Tay’s feature film directorial debut in 2013.
