Tim Joyce Biography
Tim Joyce is an American newscaster and meteorologist working as a meteorologist and also as a reporter on Chicago’s WGN-TV. Prior to that, Joyce served at KCPQ based in Seattle. He also presented weather and traffic at KRCW (NW32) in Portland, Oregon on the “Portland’s Morning News” program. The program is part of the morning’s nationally broadcast “Eye Opener”.

After he was done with his high school education, Tim studied journalism at the University of Kansas and also meteorology at Mississippi State University. He also took the Master Gardener classes through Oregon State University’s Portland Metro Extension office.

He began his broadcast career journey at KTKA-TV in Topeka, Kansas. Then he later moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1995 where he worked for KVAL-TV. Joyce moved to the neighboring Springfield in 2000 where he worked for KMTR-TV. Joyce co-hosted the morning show for the NBC affiliate which became the number-one morning show in the Eugene/Springfield area. Then later he got another opportunity in Portland, Oregon, serving as a meteorologist for CBS affiliate KOIN from 2004 until April 2011.
He began working at Portland station KRCW (NW32), on its then-new “Portland’s Morning News” program in November 2011. Joyce also worked for some time for Seattle-based Northwest Cable News before finally moving to WGN-TV on June 19, 2021.
Some of his greatest moments were the story he covered of a little boy with autism who was lost in the woods near his Oregon home. The six-year-old didn’t have the ability to yell for Search & Rescue teams looking for him that cold winter night. The family’s dogs stuck with the boy and kept him warm overnight and then barked to alert the searchers when they resumed their search in the morning.
He has covered sad and depressing human tragedy stories like the high school shootings at Thurston High School outside of Eugene, Oregon, where four people died and 26 were injured. The nature of his work requires him to go to places where Mother Nature is wreaking havoc on people’s lives from wildfires to mudslides.
He has witnessed all sorts of wild weather that he won’t forget like the terrible 1997 Willamette River floods, the devastating wind storms of 2007 when there were wind gusts of 125 mph on the Oregon Coast, and being on-air for the 2008 Vancouver, Washington, tornado.

Joyce replaced Former WGN Meteorologist Mike Hamernik who died in March as the new weekend morning meteorologist on July 3, 2021. When he is not working he loves traveling, Every year, he tries to visit one place on the planet he has never been to, and one place in the Northwest he has not visited.
Last year included: Italy and Iceland; locally Enumclaw, Lake Tapps, and the whole South Washington Coast. Out of 50 states, he visited 34. He has been as far east as Berlin, as far south as Hawaii, as far north as Reykjavik, and as far west as Nagasaki.
