Klaassen joined Kean University in 1998 when he finished his high school education at Eastern Christian High School. In 2002, he graduated with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Earth Sciences and Meteorology.

During his career, he has broadcasted snowstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and droughts. In 2012, the American Meteorological Society granted him the CBM (certified broadcast meteorologist) seal. He feels that the work he does in the community is just as important as the one he does inside the studio walls at WRTV.
