Tom Atkins Biography
Tom Atkins is an American meteorologist working for WJET/WFXP as an anchor of the weathercast on weeknight evenings and late news shows. He joined the station in January 1995 as a weekend meteorologists.

Atkins joined Iowa State University after finishing his high school education. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology and Broadcast Journalism. During his time in college, he served a private weather forecasting company in Iowa.

Atkins’ interest in the weather was ignited at a young age when his parents bought him a weather station for his 6th birthday. Unlike other kids, he was fascinated by stormy weather and enjoyed watching the weather beat of the news with his father every night.
When he was 15, Atkins secured his first weather job at a private forecasting company at Newark Airport in New Jersey. Out of college, he secured his first TV weather job at WHO-TV in Des Moines. There, he managed to pursue tornadoes during his free time.
Atkins joined WSEE-TV in Erie as a weather forecaster in 1988. Besides forecasting the weather, he teaches meteorology at Penn State Behrend. Also, he enjoys speaking engagements throughout the region and forecasting for radio stations Rocket 101, JET 1400, WCTL, Star 104, Z1023, WYVL, and The Fan.

In that tribute, he revealed that his father was married twice, first at 19 and to Flora, whom he was married to for over 45 years.
Dr. Thurston’s first wife passed away a month after giving birth to his brother because of a blood disease. Following this, he moved to NYC, where he obtained his Master’s and Doctorate’s degrees. Dr. Thurston served in the National Guard and taught elementary school.
