Tom Laidlaw is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenceman, who is now one of the 20 castaways who will compete on season 39 of Survivor: Island of the Idols which premiered on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 on CBS. He was the first Canadian-born person to be a contestant on the show.

Tom began his National Hockey League career in 1980 with the New York Rangers, arriving from Northern Michigan University. Laidlaw also played for the Los Angeles Kings. After the 1990 season, Laidlaw left the NHL. He played 1 season for the Phoenix Roadrunners of the IHL before retiring from hockey. Afterward, Laidlaw became the colour commentator on Kings’ radio broadcasts.

Currently, he runs a sports management company in Rye Brook, New York. He is also a motivational speaker and frequently uses his mantra of living a “True Grit Life.” He promotes the “True Grit Life” through public speaking engagements and weekly podcast episodes.
