Writing career

Following a one-year tenure at Florida Today, Tom moved to New York Newsday in 1983, becoming a columnist in 1990. Verducci started writing for Sports Illustrated in 1993. While writing for Sports Illustrated, he shortly joined the Toronto Blue Jays as an outfielder for spring training in 2005. Tom is also a regular guest on The Dan Patrick Show.

Verducci’s most recent work is titled The Cubs Way. The book entails the story of how Theo Epstein and a perfect 5-year plan took the Cubs from a 101-loss season in 2012 to the 2016 World Series Champions. He then spent a month in the MLB’s ”Playoff Bubble” covering the postseason for FOX’s MLB broadcast in October 2020. Tom also appeared on Sports Illustrated’s daily cover on October 27, 2020.

Aside from his writing duties, he works in television. Verducci works for MLB Network, where he works as a ”baseball insider” and co-host of several programs with Bob Costas. In 2014, he called his first World Series for Fox together with Joe Buck and Harold Reynolds. He was the first non-former player and manager to serve in the broadcast booth as a color commentator for a World Series telecast (and any pro sports) since ABC’s Howard Cosell in 1983. Tom and Reynolds would be replaced by John Smoltz as Fox’s top baseball analyst after the 2015 season. He then worked the 2016 Fall Classic as a sideline reporter, a role he still holds to this day, and as a studio analyst, only doing so for 2016.
