Williams abruptly left “Newswatch 16 This Morning” on March 18, 2022. He had been co-anchoring the show since 1996. After nearly three decades with the station, he decided to run for political office.
On March 29, 2022, he made an official announcement that he would be running as a Republican for the 119th District. On the website of the state’s Secretary of State, the date that Williams left WNEP—March 18, 2022—is listed as the “first day to circulate and file nomination petitions for Senator in the General Assembly, Representative in the General Assembly, and Member of State Committee.”
Insiders say Williams’ takeoff was a shock to most, with a couple of individuals realizing ahead of time he’d leave. On March 18, the station paid tribute to him live, but it didn’t say anything about his plans to run for office, even though it wasn’t yet official.
