Cavalier joined Drexel University in 1979 after finishing his studies at Father Judge High School. In 1981, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics/Atmospheric Science. He later joined Penn State University, where he earned a Master of Science in Meteorology in 1981.
