Wale Aliyu is a Nigerian-American journalist working for Atlanta News First as a weeknight anchor since joining the station in 2025. Previously, he worked as an evening anchor at the ABC affiliate in San Diego.

He made history there as the city’s first African American male to be a main anchor. He was also the only journalist in the market to consistently anchor whole newscasts on the site of big stories while compelling community leaders to find solutions.
Aliyu has covered the ongoing migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border and record-breaking floods that left thousands of minorities in the community homeless. Before moving to San Diego, he was an anchor and reporter for Boston 25 News. There, he steered viewers during the pandemic, nightly protests after the murder of George Floyd, and multiple deep playoff runs. He also debuted a series that looked into the challenges of policing in Massachusetts.
Aliyu also worked at WNBC in New York City. While in New York City, he covered major breaking news like the Trump Tower fire, helicopter crashes, several New Year’s Eve celebrations, and a chain of suspicious packages that appeared across the city. He also covered the lawsuit against Mexican drug kingpin “El Chapo.”
Before his time in New York, Aliyu was a reporter at WKYC-TV in Cleveland and WKEF/WRGT-TV in Dayton. He reported from the 2016 Republican National Convention and helped guide WKYC’s broadcast of the tragic police-involved shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. He also gained the trust of Rice’s mother, securing her first interview.
One of Aliyu’s most unforgettable assignments was delivering live reports as the Cleveland Cavaliers clinched their historic 2016 NBA Championship, putting an end to the city’s 52-year championship drought. He launched his journalism career in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri, where he reported across several media platforms, including radio, TV, and digital outlets.
Every year, Aliyu returns to his alma mater to coach prospective journalists. He is also a sought-after emcee and motivational speaker. With a passion for health and wellness, he loves playing and coaching basketball. He is working to become a certified Physio Kinesiologist under Navy SEAL instructors to help people beat chronic pain. He serves as a member of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
