Wallace Shawn (full name – Wallace Michael Shawn) is an American actor, essayist, and playwright who is best known for starring in the CBS series “Young Sheldon.” He portrays John Sturgis, a college physics professor.

Shawn graduated from The Putney School in Putney, Vermont, and then attended Harvard College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history. He is also an alumnus of Magdalen College, Oxford where he studied economics, philosophy, Latin, and politics. Shawn was initially intending to become a diplomat.

Shawn has also appeared as Jeff Engels in The Cosby Show (1987–1991), Cyrus Rose in “Gossip Girl” (2008–2012), and Grand Nagus Zek in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993–1999). Shawn’s plays include Grasses of a Thousand Colors (2008), The Designated Mourner (1996), and the Obie Award–winning Aunt Dan and Lemon (1985). He has also scripted A Master Builder (2013) and co-written the screenplay for “My Dinner.”
Shawn is a voice actor for TV series and animated films such as Kingdom Hearts III, Monsters, Inc. (Toy Story franchise), Mr. Gilbert Huph in “The Incredibles,” Bertram in “Family Guy,” Purple Pirate Paul in “Tom and Jerry: Shiver Me Whiskers,” Principal Mazur in “A Goofy Movie,” and many others. During the 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict, Shawn voiced his support for the Palestinian people. Shawn is an active member of Jewish Voice for Peace. He is also on the advisory board.
