Xavier Scruggs Education

Scruggs attended Poway High School, in Poway, California, where he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 50th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft. He declined to sign with the Mariners and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and played college baseball for the UNLV Rebels.

Professional career

St. Louis Cardinals

The Seattle Mariners drafted Xavier in the 5oth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft out of Poway High School in Poway, California. However, he did not sign with them and attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to play college baseball for the UNLV Rebels. There he hit .328/.427/.652 with 34 home runs and 112 runs batted in within his three years time. Following his junior year, he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round of the 2008 Draft and signed with them.

He was then called up to the majors for the first time on September 4, 2014. Scruggs made his major league debut the same day, but his major league action in 2014 was short. He later began the following season at Memphis. Following batting .274 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI in 17 games in April, Scruggs was named the Cardinals’ organization Player of the Month. The Cardinals then recalled him from Memphis on June 19, 2015. After four days he provided 3 hits and 2 RBI, including a game-tying double, in an eventual 4-3 victory against the Miami Marlins. On June 27, he added another three-hit, 2-RBI effort in an 8-1 victory against the Chicago Cubs.

Miami Marlins

Xavier then signed a minor league deal with the Miami Marlins on November 30, 2015. On August 19, 2016, he was called up from Triple-A to play first base for the Marlins and hit his first career homer, a 2-run shot off Pirates pitcher Cha Kuhl, in a 3-1 Marlins victory on August 20. Scruggs was then outrighted off of the team’s 40-man roster on October 24.

NC Dinos

He later signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the NC Dinos of the KBO League on December 26, 2016. After the 2018 season, Scruggs became a free agent. During his two years with the club in the KBO, he hit 61 home runs and drove in 208 runs.

Leones de Yucatan

Xavier signed with the Leones de Yucatan of the Mexican League on June 17, 2019. On December 5, 2019, he was released.

Post-baseball career

In April 2021, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals baseball operations team as the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant. Since 2021, he has covered MLB for ESPN. He was then hired as an inaugural panelist for the MLB Network show Off Base in April 2022.
