Franklin works with CBS42 News where he serves the station as a weekday evening anchor. His career in journalism has over 35 years’ worth of experience. The Detroit native and graduate of the University of Michigan Alum first came to Alabama in the year 1991 working as an anchor at WBRC-TV6. While working at WBRC, he gained notoriety as the first African-American male to anchor in prime-time in Birmingham.
His broadcasting career kick-started in radio at WDZZ-FM 93 in Flint, Michigan where he was working as an announcer, production manager, sports anchor, and news anchor. This was before leaving for his first job in television working at WILX-TV(NBC) in Lansing, Michigan. While working at WILX, Art became the first African-American male to anchor a regular broadcast newscast in Lansing. Asides from that, he was also the station’s Capital Reporter and Business Reporter.
He was later hired away from WILX by the NBC station in Norfolk, Virginia, WAVY-TV to become the station’s military affairs correspondent. In addition to regular reporting from the Pentagon, it is at WILX that he was sent on overseas assignments covering the conflict in the Persian Gulf which include Saudi Arabia, Spain, Germany, the Caribbean, Bahrain, Jordan, Italy, and France.
While he was working at WAVY-TV, he anchored the station’s public service program known as Bottom Line and was also working as a fill-in anchor. He, additionally, was a News Director at WOWI Radio and anchored a two-hour live radio talk show at the station.
When he left Birmingham in the year 2003, he wrote a book titled, Give It All You Got. This is a motivational book for young men. He, later on, returned to television in Atlanta at WXIA 11Alive News the NBC affiliate before becoming an anchor at WAGA-TV FOX 5 where he was working until starting a Public Relations firm. Franklin returned to News and Birmingham to launch the CBS42 Morning News with Art Franklin and served as a managing editor. He is now anchoring the evening news at 4, 5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts.
Among his more than 75 journalistic and community awards is Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement- News Excellence- for spot news coverage in Atlanta in the year 2005. He also won an Outstanding Achievement Television Programming Excellence in the year 1995, Scripps Howard Excellence in Journalism Award, 1994, RTNDA Best Documentary, 1994, Alabama Associated Press Award-Best Documentary 1994, Alabama Associated Press Award Best Reporter, 1995, Virginia UPI Best Reporter 1989, and Hampton Roads Black Media Professional Best Spot News Coverage 1990.
Franklin was most recently inducted into the 2019 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle, which recognized more than 25 years in the industry, and in 2017 the Alabama Broadcasting Association named him Alabama’s Best News Anchor. He and his wife, Michele are proud parents of a blended family of four adult children.
