Brian van de Graaff Biography
Brian van de Graaff is an American meteorologist who is working for WJLA on the weekend nights on 7News ON YOUR SIDE! at 7NewsDC. He has been working for the station for more than two decades now.
Brian van de Graaff Career
Van de Graaff holds the American Meteorological Society’s prestigious Seal of Approval. Before his role today, he served as a forecaster of the weekday morning and midday weather, with his first assignment ABC7’s Good Morning Washington. Due to his skills in his career, he toured many states including, New York City, Salisbury, Maryland, Richmond, Virginia, and all over Washington, D.C. His love and passion began when he was still a young boy and was always fueled by Doug Hill who was his mentor.
Van de Graaff says, “It was not only my studies but my one-on-one attention from Doug that helped me hone my forecasting skills.” The most memorable experience in his career is of the time he spent in New Orleans only days before Katrina hit. The expression “the calm before the storm” could not have resonated more than during that time- it was eerily quiet with a very slight breeze, and the skies were bright blue. The long-time NOLA residents were relatively unphased by the weather reports. The hotel staff proclaimed that “it is always so much fun when the storms come” and “we will take good care of you,” one family member was considering “waiting out the storm.”
Brian’s response that “it really wouldn’t look good for me to leave a family member in the path of a major hurricane” convinced everyone that it was time to “get out of Dodge!” He attended George Mason University where he graduated.
Van de Graaff is always on the road in the StormTrak7, the station’s mobile weather vehicle, and is no surprise to the residents. The station’s mobile weather vehicle is equipped with high-quality weather instruments which are perfect for teaching kids all that involves the weather as well as weather safety.
He was also an Eagle Scout as a young adult and is ever glad. He has also participated in some activities like hiking and backpacking throughout the U.S., from points along the Appalachian Trail in the East to the Grand Canyon in the West and places in between. Whenever he is not working, he enjoys traveling and has toured different countries all around the globe. For instance, he went to Australia and considers that to be his Farthest journey and tour. He majors and focuses on earning the most points and miles to travel with his family of four.
