Chris Holcomb Biography

Chris Holcomb is an American Meteorologist working with 11Alive News/WXIA/WATL in Atlanta, Georgia where he serves the station as a Chief Meteorologist since 1991. He has been working with the station as a Chief Meteorologist for over 24 years. 

Chris Holcomb Education

In DeKalb County, he went to elementary and high school. Later, he enrolled at the University of Georgia to study Journalism/Broadcast News. Chris went to Mississippi State University to study meteorology after deciding that he wanted to specialize in weather. In addition, he received the AMS Seal of Approval. He also undertook extensive testing and reviews in order to receive the American Meteorological Society’s coveted Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) certification.

Chris Holcomb Career

Holcomb works with 11Alive News where he serves the station as a Chief Meteorologist. He accepted his first job at WMAZ AM/WAYS FM radio where he was serving the station as an afternoon news reporter. After about 9 months, he moved to the TV side of the building as a reporter and weather anchor for WMAZ-TV. When he experienced every aspect of TV News reporting.

Chris shot and edited his own stories covering the Legislature and was also a fill-in anchor, fill-in weather anchor, and weekend weather anchor for the weekday morning and evening newscasts. This was after realizing that he wanted to focus on weather and therefore joined Mississippi State University.

Later on, after about three and a half years at WMAZ, he was offered his dream job in his hometown of Atlanta at WXIA-TV. The year 2014 saw that was promoted to Chief Meteorologist. Asides from that, he also appears on 11Alive weekly at 5, 6, 7, 10, and 11 PM newscasts on 11Alive and WATL.

Holcomb was honored with Emmy Awards for Weather Anchor numerous times and also holds Emmys for Spot News/Team coverage and Special Continuous Coverage while tracking storms. Asides from this, he also received Gabby Awards for Best Weather Coverage and Associated Press Awards for Best Weather Reporting.

Asides from this, he also received the John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in 2019. He states that the Lifetime Achievement Award honors sustained contributions to the profession throughout a career.

He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation. Asides from this, he has also reported live for the past 20 years at the Race for Research. Asides from this, he states that his first race was in memory of his sister who died of a brain tumor. He also serves as an emcee for many events in and around Atlanta like the Keep Georgia Beautiful Awards, a regular at many schools talking about the weather, and St. Jude’s Southern Evening of Hope.

Chris is also a top social contributor in Atlanta and his updates can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. He is often on Facebook Live between newscasts updating social media on what’s happening in the weather. Holcomb states that it has been a dream to work in his hometown.
